2010 season may bring increased number of storms

Experts Predict Active Hurricane Season for Maritimers

The Canadian Hurricane Centre (CHC) is cautioning East coasters that the 2010 hurricane season may bring above average activity. "A number of international hurricane authorities are predicting that this year will be an active hurricane season in the Atlantic basin," said Chris Fogarty, the CHC's program supervisor. On average, each year one or two storms directly affect Canadian territory, with another two or three threatening Canada's offshore waters, a CHC release says.

The CHC noted that the United States' National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predict an above normal level of hurricane activity in the Atlantic during the 2010 hurricane season. The NOAA outlook calls for 14-23 named storms, 8-14 hurricanes and 3-7 major hurricanes.

These predictions are consistent with other organizations' seasonal forecasts, the CHC continued. In 2009 two storms affected Canadian waters and territories. Hurricane Bill struck a "glancing blow" with the centre of the storm tracking just south of Nova Scotia on Aug. 23, 2009. One week later, the remnants of Tropical Storm Danny brought heavy rains and gusty winds that affected most of the Maritimes and Newfoundland.

While hurricane season runs from June through November, hurricanes typically start to become a concern in Canadian waters a bit later in the season, the CHC.

Seeing the industry has been generally slow because of the mild spring and winter, CDRG can focus it's energies on preparing the Red Teams in the event of a hurricane hitting the east coast. "Having a national CAT database, enables our eastern members to rest on their two ears knowing they can count on outside help should something catastrophic happen. We will be following storm alerts very closely and acting accordingly". adds JF Raymond, Marketing and Communication Director at CDRG

CDRG's strength as a coast to coast Canadian Network of Independent Restoration Specialists is quickly becoming a force to be reckoned with 1726 restoration experts, an average of 18.8 years in business and 270 million in annual volume – it's safe to say our strength lies in our members. The rigorous CDRG selection process only chooses members which meet the highest industry standards. All of our 150+ locations are experienced and equipped to meet all challenges put before them. No job is too big or too small for CDRG members.
