Today's marketplace moves so fast that it is often hard to keep track of all the mergers and acquisitions taking place. During these lean economic times mergers and acquisitions (M & A) are strong motivators for profit driven corporations.
However, when we look beneath the surface of these developments, there is a visceral reaction taking place within the workplace. Employees are faced with the spectre of change which could adversely affect their jobs and livelihoods. It is a fundamental trait of human beings to be resistant to change. We all have a fear of the unknown, or things we cannot control, and tend to run the other way.
When we reflect on change, we can draw a parallel between change and Newton's law of motion which states that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. From a workplace perspective people have a tendency to prefer the status quo. When the action of change occurs due to a M & A, the reaction is often resistance and confusion. When new tools or processes are introduced we tend to feel incompetent, inefficient and ultimately, less useful than we did before. This outlook can stifle growth and success.
In order to be successful in today's market we need to embrace change, and be adaptable in order to meet the market’s demands. Businesses that adopt an open mind when dealing with a merger or acquisition can benefit from accepting the changes that will occur. By rising to the challenge and taking advantage of the opportunities they can guide their companies to even greater success.
There's no doubt a merger or acquisition signals change. The attitude you adopt may determine how well the integration takes place, on both an individual and business level. Although change might seem frightening, it is also the secret to success.
